The Currency of Tibet by Wolfgang Bertsch

Wolfgang Bertsch, The Currency of Tibet, A Sourcebook for the Study of Tibetan Coins, Paper Money and other Forms of Currency, Library of Tibetan Works and Archives, Dharamsala, 2002, 8, 158 p. with index.

bertsch currency of tibet

This book by the leading Tibetan coin specialist Wolfgang Bertsch is a comprehensive Bibliography on Tibetan Coins, Paper Money and other Forms of Currency like primitive money/ tea etc. as well as militaria and medals. It includes Literature in western and Chinese literature, sales and auction catalogues as well as published and unpublished material.

In the first 40 pages there is a historical survey of Tibet's currency, an explanation of Tibetan currency units and the dating on Tibetan coins and banknotes and a illustrated catalogue of coins and paper money with descriptions of all types.

The extremely valuable effort of collecting all sources concerning Tibetan currency is enhanced by Mr. Bertsch by giving the important citations concerning Tibetan money from lots of the cited Literature. That is of great help since much of the literature is not devoted to Tibetan money but is early travel literature, as well as scientific books and journals that often are hard to get.
